| Introduction to Winter Walking & Munros |
|
Designed for those with experience of summer hill walking, this 4 day course introduces winter novices to the techniques and equipment required to venture into the mountains under snow or icy conditions and allows you to apply your new found skills on the best of the West Highland Munros. Coming to grips with snow and ice, crampons and ice axes can seem a little daunting at first. All our
courses ensure you learn at your own pace and enjoy these new and exciting skills. You will be taken through an gentle progression from walking in easy soft snow to ascending slopes with more firm snow. We look at using the boot as a tool before moving onto walking with an ice axe - as a balancing aid, as a step cutter and most importantly as a fall arrester. We will make the learning of these vital skills progressive and logical, making sure you are confident before moving onto more advanced techniques. We would then aim to look at using crampons on a variety of slopes, beginning with gentle snow and moving towards steeper and firmer snow and ice. We would also aim to look at winter navigation techniques and avalanche awareness. The course is based at the wonderful Isles of Glencoe Hotel in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, with its spectacular loch-side setting, dramatic views of the Glen Coe mountains and its own pool, hydro seat and bio-sauna - which is a wonderful way of relaxing after a day in the snow! Included in the cost is 4 nights' bed and breakfast accommodation and packed lunches. This leaves you free to choose from the range of great local restaurants in the evening. The shorter 2 day option for this course, Introduction to Winter Walking shares the first two days.
